This is an interview Conor did at the 2003 Warped Tour with Dave from Glassjaw. Keep reading to find out what Glassjaw thinks of their old record label, some juicy rumors about the Blood Brothers and Dave’s guilty pleasure. . .

For anyone who doesn’t know, can you give a brief history of the band?

We formed in like ’93 by Beck and Daryl. I don’t know, we put two albums out. One on Roadrunner, one on Warner Brothers. I don’t know. . .

How’s the tour going so far?

It’s going good, very good. It’s fun to play the main stage. We played it last year and we hated it more than anything in the world. But it’s cool.

Why the change of heart?

It just was like a waste of time last year. It was an uneventful, shitty stage. It was really unorganized and we were playing to hardly any kids. You know, where as we’re playing to a lot of new people this time around. So, it’s better, it’s more worth it for the band.

We went to high school with Cody from the Blood Brothers, and I was wondering if you have any good Blood Brothers stories.

I probably do if I think about it. We had a lot of fun with the Blood Brothers, they’re awesome. We’re really good friends with them now. They’re totally cool kids, a bunch of idiots like us. They’re fuckin’ nuts live, they’re awesome. Their record’s insane. I’m pretty sure Cody had gay sex with our guitar tech, Craig. I don’t know, we’d always find them in hotel rooms, alone, in just their tighty whiteys, you know, goofing around.

What’s the craziest or funniest thing that’s ever happend on a Glassjaw tour?

The first like three days of the Deftones tour, we didn’t know anybody yet. And the Deftones have their crew, this like totally professional crew of like 30 fuckin’ older guys that would like fill the stage and shit. And out of complete boredom, we made essentially like a gay porn in the back of our bus and took the liberty of showing it to all of them within like the second day of tour. So it really set things off on a good note. It was like a joke obviously, it was a really stupid film. But the whole tour, their crew is just like bustin’ on us constantly, like, “I don’t know any straight man that would do shit like that!” and we were like, “C’mon man, it’s cool, it’s fun!” That was a classic.

And how is Daryl doing with the tour? Is he feeling alright?

Yeah, he’s been fine. I mean, Daryl’s illness is weird. When he’s fine, he’s perfect. 100 percent more energy than any of us, gets sick less than any of us on the road with colds and bullshit like that. But when he relapses, which has only been in Europe so far, it’s brutal. He’s like in the hospital for like eight days at a time. But he’s been fine since out last attempt at Europe a few months ago. He’s been fine.

And is he doing a side band with Vinnie from The Movielife?

Not that I know of. I don’t really know, he’s always doing. . . he gets his hands into a bunch of little things when he’s home just during the time off. I don’t really know of anything serious he’s doing, but it’s totally possible.

If you could get rid of one band, who would you get rid of?

Oh man, I could think of like a thousand. All the new metal bands just need to go. Fuckin’ Linkin Park and Staind. Shit, there’s just so goddamned many. I could go on and on. . .

Did you feel outcast when you were on RoadRunner?

Well RoadRunner just sucks. They suck, it’s a pile of shit. The bands, the ethics just suck. It was one of the least favorable things—Glassjaw having an association with RoadRunner. I like RoadRunner way back in the day when like Obituary was on it and shit like that. But, RoadRunner sucks.

If you could be anyone for a day, who would you be and what would you do?

I’d be Justin Timberlake. Just ’cause you know. . . I’m sure he has fun on a daily basis.

What are some smaller bands people should check out?

Anatomy of a Ghost. . . almost all the bands we’ve toured with. Blood Brothers, Give Up The Ghost, Dredge, who we toured with on our last tour. They’re freakin’ one of the best bands to see, they’re awesome performers. Live, they fuckin’ take the cake.

What are three CDs every punk fan should own?

I don’t know shit about punk man. I used to warship the Misfits when I was younger, but it wasn’t as big for me and people I knew. It was more metal and hardcore when I was younger. Pop punk makes me want to kill myself.

So what do you least like about punk rock these days?

I just don’t think it’s punk rock at all. I mean, I don’t think there’s anything punk rock about Warped Tour. I don’t understand half the shit on this tour. It’s not anything I could get into. I can’t relate to it, it’s uninspiring. We’re having fun and we have a bunch of friends on tour. Thrice is awesome, and Andrew WK just takes the cake. No one can step to Andrew WK. He brings the party man, it’s a breath of fresh air. The rest of the shit just blends together for me, I can’t differentiate one band from the next.

What are your favorite movies?

“First Blood,” “Zoolander” and “Royal Tenenbaums.”

What would you say is your guilty pleasure?

Jerking off onto Todd’s toothbrush.

What is the one band that you would most want to play with?

You know, Radiohead would be cool. Elvis Costello, P.J. Harvey, Bjork—which we would never play with because we suck and they’re amazing.
